Now that we’re two months into the NHL season, our sample size on special teams is growing to a point where we can start drawing real conclusions. The Boston Bruins are in dead last in special teams goals above average and just fired their coach, all just two years removed from one of the most dominant seasons in league history. The Winnipeg Jets lead the league in points (34) and check in at 2nd with 11 Goals Above Average.

The offseason additions by the Nashville Predators have predictably boosted their special teams. This week they hold a 3rd place Goals Above Average ranking (+10), but sit tied for 28th in points (17) due to dreadful 5 on 5 play.

The Edmonton Oilers have clawed their way back to respectability in the standings following a horrific start for the season. The Stanley Cup runners up are 4th in the Pacific Division. Their improved play is not the result of dramatic improvement in their special teams. The Oilers are 27th in Goals Above Average and Power Play percentage and 29th in Penalty Kill Percentage.

The New Jersey Devils lead the league in Special Teams Goals Above Average with a +13 rating.

Continuing to track the Flyers: through 21 games (26% of the season), Philadpehia has produced 12 power play goals, or 39% to their 2023 - 2024 season total.
