Week 9 Special Teams Goals Above Average Rankings
Is all well in special teams land? The Lightning and Oilers, the 1st and 5th most prolific power play teams a season ago, both rose 5 spots overall this week, both on the strength of the penalty kill instead of the power play. Nashville has yet to score a goal with the man advantage since November and from the top five out of the top ten after going from above average production to below average production. The Panthers held at 3rd overall, despite a prolific week seeing their goals above average shooting from 4.5 to 8. The bigger takeaway from the jump in production is how far ahead Winnipeg and New Jersey were. Boston’s coaching change has not paid dividends on the power play or penalty kill as the Bruins fall into last place.
Week 9’s Biggest Risers:
Edmonton Oilers: 25th to 20th (+5)
Montreal Canadiens: 18th to 13th (+5)
Tampa Bay Lightning: 10th to 5th (+5)
Week 9’s Biggest Fallers:
Philadephia Flyers: 14th to 24th (-10)
Nashville Predators: 4th to 11th (-7)
Tracking the Flyers
It was a big week for Philadelphia (on the power play)! While the (formerly) stout penalty gave up seven goals to opponents (four to Florida in one game), the Flyers scored three power play goals this week, bringing their season total to 15. Philadelphia is now 35% through their schedule and 48% to last season’s power play goal total. This despite being the biggest faller in the league in the past week, tumbling 10 spots from 14th to 24th.
